Distributor for the Margate Mercury

We are looking for a personable, organised, confident individual to distribute our quarterly magazine The Margate Mercury. This freelance, part time role will commence with the Autumn 2026 issue, launching 27 August 2026.

Key dates in which the distributor will need to be available for work are the weekends of 27 August and 26 November 2026 this year, with further dates for 2027 to be confirmed. The magazine is published four times annually.

The fee is based on the number of copies distributed and the magazine pagination, and is paid per 1,000 copies. The lowest rate per 1,000 is £50.

For 8,000 copies of a 48 page magazine the fee is £400.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To collect copies of the new issue at our container in Westwood Industrial Estate, Thanet, on the day of delivery to take to the launch venue and then distribute in the community.
  • To distribute the appropriate number of copies to stockists and to be available for top-ups over the following weeks as/when required.
  • To distribute sister publications in Margate around their time of publication.
  • To update and add information, distribution numbers and dates to the Google database after every distribution round.
  • To communicate regularly with the Distribution Manager and in the distribution WhatsApp group.
  • To take and upload photographs of the magazine in situ in stockists during distribution, sharing these with the Brightside team/WhatsApp group in real time for SMM’s to update on our social media.
  • To liaise with stockists to provide the best POS for the magazines.
  • To find and approach new stockists/advertisers to increase the reach of the magazine. Commission structure available based on successful lead gathering for advertising.
  • To attend a six monthly distribution breakfast meeting.

Essential attributes:

  • Lives in Margate and knows the town and surrounding areas well.
  • Available for all proposed publication dates, including the weekends of 27 August and 26 November, plus top-ups as and when required.
  • A reliable vehicle and clean driving licence.
  • Access to the Internet and confident using spreadsheets in Google Drive.
  • An excellent communicator.
  • Physically fit and able to carry copies of the magazine around town.
  • Comfortable dealing with a range of business owners.
  • Driven with a positive attitude and committed approach towards visiting stockists.
  • Confident to approach potential stockists.
  • Able to prioritise and manage time effectively and work independently.
